When we all shared our appreciation before V got transferred out of ICU, she replied that she strives to treat each patient (and the surrounding supporting family and friends' group), the same way as if it had been her father/mother/family member there in the hospital. She truly demonstrated putting that sentiment into practice while V was under her devoted care.
This nurse did an outstanding job with the care of our family member, V, recently during his time at Goshen Hospital. As our loved one's health deteriorated, she not only saw to every medical and support need he had, but also to any of the needs of the family members present. We had several helpful and supportive staff members during the time V was at Goshen Hospital, but she really went above and beyond and is deserving of special recognition for her efforts. At a time when several tough decisions had to be made about continuing with treatment or transitioning V to hospice care, she answered all of the family's many questions in a clear, straightforward manner. Her communication allowed the family to feel well-informed and safe to ask any further questions (without feeling silly for more explanation). She did this with a pleasant smile on her face and a caring attitude (and even found ways to help us smile during a stressful and sorrowful time). She was attentive in checking V's vitals as often as requested, explaining what the monitors were telling us about his current status, and was quick and efficient when any task needed done. After it was decided to transition to hospice care for V, the family was very stressed and upset, feeling we had received conflicting information from different staff members at the hospital about placement. She overheard the situation and stepped forward to help us bring the conflict to a quick and satisfactory resolution (without a single request to do so from the family). She consulted with V's physicians who agreed the appropriate placement was in the hospital, to make sure he got the care he needed and deserved during his final days of life. There are not adequate words to thank her enough for stepping up for the family at that stressful time. V passed away last week while under the wonderful care of the nurses and doctors at Goshen. All of them did a great job, but her nursing skills, support, communication and compassion really made her stand out in our eyes. The entire family wishes to express our sincerest gratitude for having an exemplary nurse such as her to care for our loved one. Please consider her for this prestigious honor.
