Mahra Alzaabi, BSN RN
I would like to nominate Nurse Mahra (Alzaabi) for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary compassion, dignity, and person-centred care she provided to my mother.
My mother is an elderly patient living with mental health challenges, and she does not speak English or Arabic, which made her hospital stay particularly vulnerable and overwhelming. Communication barriers, unfamiliar surroundings, and emotional distress could easily have left her feeling isolated and frightened.
However, Mahra went far beyond her clinical duties and truly made a difference. She didn't just care for my mother as a patient; she cared for her as a person. She showed exceptional patience, kindness, and humanity in every interaction. Despite the language barrier, she found ways to communicate, reassure, comfort, and make my mother feel safe, respected, and understood.
What touched me most was that Mahra treated my mother with dignity and warmth, never making her feel like a burden. She consistently demonstrated empathy and emotional intelligence, recognising that caring for an elderly person with mental health needs requires more than medical treatment: it requires compassion, presence, and genuine human connection.
As a family member, seeing someone look after your loved one with such dedication brings indescribable comfort. Her actions gave us reassurance during a difficult and emotional time and reminded us of the true meaning of nursing.
Mahra represents the future of nursing that makes us all proud. A future built on kindness, humanity, excellence, and compassionate care. If this is the standard of care that future nurses will continue to bring, patients and families will be in safe and caring hands.
She truly embodies everything the DAISY Award stands for: compassionate care, clinical excellence, respect, and going the extra mile for patients and families. Through small acts of kindness, she transformed my mother's experience in ways our family will never forget.
