Mahmoud brought my brother down by himself, near the hospital door. He saw the sun for the first time after two and a half months in bed.
It's not often in life that you encounter someone who makes you forget you're in a hospital and lets you feel like you're really at home instead. I encountered this person, a nurse, and he was like a brother, a friend, and a comforter to me.
From the first time we entered the care hospital, we were exhausted mentally and physically. My brother's leg was broken, and he already had plates and screws fitted from another hospital, but it was really not good. The first person to meet us and receive us with a beautiful smile and an open mind was nurse Mahmoud. He didn't waste time. He started asking a lot of questions and asked to see my brother's back. We were surprised that Mahmoud saw what we did not notice. He saw a very large pressure sore on my brother's back. Without scaring us, he reassured us and said, "Don't worry, here in the hospital, we encounter many cases like this, and the sore gets well in the end." And indeed, with his follow-up and attention in every time he is on-duty, the sore just gone well and finally healed.
When Mahmoud would enter the room, he would be with his light spirit. When we would talk to him, he always gave us satisfying answers to hear, and he listened. He was the first one to assist my brother out of bed to a wheelchair, despite my brother always refusing for days. Mahmoud didn't need to have more words to convince my brother, but his persuasive smile was enough. When my brother got out of bed and into a wheelchair, my mother was really happy. Our joy was indescribable, and we have videos documenting this beautiful moment.
Mahmoud brought my brother down by himself, near the hospital door. He saw the sun for the first time after two and a half months in bed. That moment was a celebration for us. Mahmoud entered my brother's bathroom and let him brush his own hand. Imagine my brother staying for too long washing his hands, seeing him happy and joyful in a way we have never seen before. Mahmoud's heroism didn't stop there.
A week later, I asked my brother to try to get himself to stand on his feet as advised by the physician. My brother said, "I won't stand unless Nurse Mahmoud comes to me." And indeed, Mahmoud entered the room, assisted my brother from the bed, supported him, and was able to stand by himself for the first time again. The room was filled with happiness. Mahmoud didn't treat his work like a job. He empathizes with the patient and treats them like a brother. He sat with us, drank tea and coffee, and always made us laugh. He was a human being before he became a nurse. He is a symbol of professionalism and compassion, and an example to be proud of.
When I heard about the DAISY, I didn't hesitate to take a moment wishing him to receive it, and so the whole world would know who he really is. And if he is nominated and will win, my brother and I will come to attend the honoring ceremony and applaud him from the bottom of our hearts.
