Despite her extensive ICU skills, she was able to overlook the typical ICU patient needs and revert to a more Hospice approach to respect both my dad and my family's wishes.
My 94-year-old father sadly made his way to the ICU after a fall and decompensation of his respiratory status. He had been admitted to UPMC with influenza A, aspiration pneumonia, and a UTI. Our family goal was simply to have him return home to my sister’s house, where we would enjoy and support him during his remaining time. Having been an ICU nurse for many years myself, I know the goal is to monitor all vital signs and treat them. Dad had a different plan. He wanted the EKG leads off, the BP cuff off and the pulse ox. He really was not happy with high-flow oxygen and continually pulled it off. Maggie was his nurse on the daylight shift for his 48 hour stay. Despite her extensive ICU skills, she was able to overlook the typical ICU patient needs and revert to a more Hospice approach to respect both my dad and my family's wishes. She permitted the removal of the BP cuff, one of his most loathsome pieces of equipment. Maggie remained at our dad's side so my sister and I could leave the room for a period of time. When the decision was made to transition Dad to Canterbury House, Maggie ensured all aspects were covered. She listened to my tearful comments from my family. We began to grieve. She remained at our side two hours beyond her 12-hour shift to ensure we and my father made our way from the ICU to Canterbury. Now he went above and beyond an often-forgotten skill, compassion. Thank you, Maggie, from the entire Vedriona family.
