Her personal mission is “No One Left Alone”
In case you haven’t noticed, 2020 has been a tough year. The COVID-19 pandemic has not only decimated families, kept loved ones apart, and taxed our healthcare systems in an unprecedented way, but it has also challenged the critical care skills of nursing, and most importantly, nursing compassion. The days now seem longer; the energy and support from society have waned; and although many nurses may be tempted to despair, our new nurse Magali has been a beacon of light for both her patients and her peers!
Magali’s heart knows no bounds. She values compassionate care above all else, especially for families and patients who are unable to be with loved ones at this time. Magali has watched too many families in pain and she considers it her highest priority to spend time with them and help them communicate to express their anguish, their sorrow, and yes, even their hope. Magali takes the time to assure them their loved one is in good hands and promises to be with them, so they are not alone.
One family was in despair because their loved one was not long for this world, and we watched as Magali assured them she would be there at his side, holding his hand, until the end. Her personal mission is “No One Left Alone”. She has helped so many families to say goodbye and then proceeds to offer her words of compassion to the families to try and ease the pain and guilt they are left with. She has shed countless tears with patients, families, and peers, yet she still finds the strength to return each day with the same bright outlook and love in her heart to share.
As a new nurse, Magali has demonstrated how important it is to hold on to our compassion and remind us that despite how hard or trying this pandemic is, these are the moments we nurses have trained for. She inspires us as an ICU team to go on and helps us to also hold on to our empathy and compassion for our patients. Magali has taught us that strength is about heart, not muscle. In the spirit of this Christmas season, a quote from the Grinch can remind us of the importance of Magali’s compassion: “It came without ribbons, it came without tags. It came without packages, boxes, or bags.” Magali is our nurse Hero!
