August 2026 Honoree
Madison Perona, BSN, RN
Some moments in life you never forget, and the birth of our daughter will always be one of them. While every parent hopes for a healthy delivery, what we never expected was that one nurse would have such a profound impact on one of the most important days of our lives. From the moment Madison P. took over my wife’s care, she brought a calm confidence that immediately eased my wife's and my anxiety. As first-time parents, we were stepping into an experience filled with uncertainty. Madison never made us feel rushed, dismissed, or alone. Instead, she became our guide, advocate, teacher, and source of reassurance throughout nearly 18 hours of labor. Her clinical knowledge was evident from the very beginning, but what truly set Madison apart was the compassion she paired with that expertise. She consistently anticipated my wife’s needs before they had to be voiced, answered every question with patience, and continually checked in — not because she had to, but because it was evident she genuinely cared.
One moment that perfectly captures who Madison is occurred before our daughter was born. She took the initiative to gather several coworkers to decorate my wife’s labor room and even French-braid her hair before delivery. It may seem like a small gesture, but it meant everything to my wife. Amid fear, pain, and uncertainty, Madison gave her a sense of dignity, confidence, and joy. She transformed a hospital room into a place of warmth and comfort where beautiful memories could be made.
As labor progressed, our OB physician informed us that our daughter was not positioned optimally for a vaginal delivery, making the possibility of a C-section increasingly likely. My wife’s only wish had been to safely deliver a happy, healthy baby, but I also knew how much she hoped to experience a vaginal birth, God willing.
Without hesitation, Madison assessed the situation, confirmed our baby’s position, and confidently developed a plan without skipping a beat. Before I knew it, Madison and a few of her nurse colleagues had my wife flipping and flopping into countless laboring positions — including one referred to as “the flying cowgirl”. “Flying” was clearly an understatement, given the positions they managed to put my wife in. Pillows, props, and even a peanut ball were practically flying around the room — along with my wife’s lifeless, epiduralized legs — as Madison performed techniques I could hardly believe were achievable for the human body.
At one point, as my 9-month pregnant wife lay on her hospital bed twisted up like a pretzel, she jokingly made a comment that she had not been this comfortable in months. However, every new position Madison performed was purposeful and filled with encouragement and optimism. Each adjustment and subsequent cervical check continued to allow my wife’s labor to progress and our baby to reposition further and further until perfectly situated, right on cue for my wife being deemed fully dilated and ready to begin pushing — just as Madison drew it up. My wife ultimately achieved the vaginal birth she had hoped for, and I truly believe Madison’s knowledge, persistence, and determination played a pivotal role in making that possible.
What impressed me most was that Madison accomplished all of this while she herself was pregnant. Despite carrying the physical demands of her own pregnancy, she never allowed her comfort to come before that of her patients. She worked tirelessly throughout our labor with remarkable energy, professionalism, and altruism. That level of selflessness is something we will never forget.
Like any great healthcare experience, our care involved an outstanding team of physicians, nurses, and staff. Yet, Madison was the constant that held everything together. She was our advocate when decisions needed to be made, our source of encouragement when labor became difficult, and the reassuring presence who stood by my wife’s side and never let her lose confidence.
Even after our daughter was born, Madison’s compassion persisted. Before ending her shift, she came to say goodbye, and she even visited us the following day after we were transferred to postpartum, simply to see how our family was doing. She didn’t have to, but she chose to. That simple act spoke volumes about the kind of nurse — and person — she is.
As a physician myself, I have had the privilege of working alongside many exceptional healthcare professionals. I understand that clinical competence is expected. What cannot be taught as easily and has unfortunately become a rarity in the medical field is genuine compassion, emotional intelligence, humility, and the ability to make patients feel understood and truly cared for. Madison possesses all of those qualities in abundance. When my wife reflects on our daughter's birth, she often says it was “the delivery of her dreams.” I honestly don’t believe that would have been possible without Madison by my wife’s side.
The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in exceptional ways. Madison exemplifies everything this award represents and so much more. Her exceptional clinical judgment, unwavering advocacy, selfless compassion, and ability to make patients feel genuinely seen and cared for fostered an experience our family will cherish for the rest of our lives.
Our daughter will never remember the day she was born, but my wife and I always will—and a significant part of that memory is because of Madison. From the bottom of our hearts, we are deeply grateful to her for helping bring our daughter into this world safely and for making one of the most meaningful days of our lives more beautiful than we could have ever imagined. Regardless of the collective decision on the recipient of this DAISY Award, Madison truly embodies and far surpasses what this honor aims to recognize — she will forever be a DAISY Award winner in our eyes.
