August 2026 Honoree
Madi Edwards, RN
A critical incident unfolded at the Clinic Avenue parking deck when an unidentified male in severe emotional distress threatened to jump from the fifth level. Tanner Security received the call via Carroll County 911 and immediately dispatched officers to the scene. As officers responded, Emergency Department Registered Nurse Madi Edwards observed their urgency and, without hesitation, offered her assistance despite having no prior knowledge of the situation. Upon learning help was needed, she immediately joined the response, demonstrating exceptional initiative and courage.
At the scene, officers encountered a visibly distressed young man who warned them not to come closer, expressing fear and distrust of police. Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, officers paused their approach. At this pivotal moment, RN Edwards stepped forward and assumed a critical role in de-escalation. Calmly and compassionately, she introduced herself as a nurse and began engaging the individual, quickly establishing trust and rapport. Through her steady reassurance and empathetic communication, RN Edwards was able to connect with the young man on a human level.
Within just one minute and sixteen seconds of initial contact, her efforts resulted in a breakthrough: the individual voluntarily discarded a knife he had been holding, fell to his knees, and began to cry. Maintaining her composure, RN Edwards, alongside security officers, approached the individual with caution. She provided comforting physical reassurance by placing a hand on his back while continuing to affirm his safety and the availability of help. The individual was safely escorted to the Emergency Department, where he received care for suicidal ideation. RN Edwards's decisive actions, bravery, and extraordinary compassion were instrumental in preventing a tragic outcome. Her willingness to step forward, build trust under pressure, and collaborate seamlessly with security personnel exemplifies the highest standards of patient care and teamwork. Tanner Security and RN Edwards's actions unquestionably saved a life and reflect great credit upon themselves and the entire organization.
