She is lovingly called “Mama Bear” by her staff because she has to make sure everyone is tucked in before she leaves each day.
Madalyn Koenig: While searching information about Madalynn, I came across some Nursing items I wanted to share.
You might be a Nurse IF you know what it means to:
Get up early
Work Late
Take Report
Get report from the same person you gave report to
Hold a hand of a dying patient or hug a family member
Look for a prescription pad
Smile when you want to cry
Say “yes” to a staffing call when you really want to say “NO”
Carry everything in your pocket
Change into hospital scrubs not to look cool but because someone bled or puked on what you wore to work
Eat in a Breakroom-if you get to eat at all and if you do it's Graham crackers and peanut butter
Not go to the bathroom for 8-12 hours
Watch the clock for your relief
Enjoy the enthusiasm of Nursing Students and smile when the “Ah-Ha” moment occurs for the student
Hear a code called
Defibrillate a patient just one more time and it works
Felt the last pulse
Listened for no breath sounds
Hear a code be called and time of death announced
Try to get a doctor on the phone
Be screamed at by a Physician or Family member
Hold a baby as it slips out of mom
Heard the fetal heartbeat
Provide relief to a person in pain
Crack a rib to save a life
Insert the IV that no one else could get and do a “Fist Pump” in the air when you get it
Saw the results, told the physician and then watch him walk into the room to share the news-(Good or Bad)
Prayed to pass a class
Swear you will never go back to school, but go back again and again and again
If you have done these things, You are a TRUE Nurse!! You are the Most Trusted Professional!!
Madalynn has done all of these things and even more. She has been a Nurse for 44 years and has worked at this hospital for 37 years of her Nursing career. She graduated from the School of Nursing in 1981. She truly cares for her patients. She has served in a variety of Nursing roles- from Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Assistant Manager, and Manager (All in Labor/Delivery). She ventured out of her safe zone to try a new form of nursing- case Management. She is lovingly called “Mama Bear” by her staff because she has to make sure everyone is tucked in before she leaves each day. She is currently serving as the Manager of Case Management.
The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Honoree is My Nurse Hero- Madalynn Koenig!
BTW, one of these days, when Madalynn decides to retire, she wants to be a “Candy Striper”!
