August 2026 Honoree
Macie Hanshew, RN
I would like to recognize Macie for the compassionate, patient-centered care she consistently provides. One meaningful example involved a 69-year-old female patient with diabetes who was four weeks post-total hip replacement and had returned for a revision due to postoperative complications.
On the day of admission, the patient was understandably frustrated because she had been told she would be able to receive pain medication prior to surgery the following day; however, no orders had been placed. Shortly after midnight, she was also informed that she could no longer eat or drink, which caused additional frustration because she did not understand the reason for this restriction.
Macie was assigned to care for this patient the morning of surgery. The patient later shared that Macie took the time to truly “listen” to her and that she finally felt heard. Macie carefully explained the importance of remaining NPO prior to surgery and advocated on the patient’s behalf by contacting the surgeon and obtaining an order for pain medication. Through her calm communication, empathy, and follow-through, Macie helped ease the patient’s anxiety and demonstrated what it means to provide care with dignity and respect.
Macie demonstrated this same level of attentiveness while caring for an 83-year-old male patient who was hard of hearing. Although the timing of his last pain medication was written on the whiteboard in his room, the patient continued to struggle with remembering when his next dose would be available. Macie took the initiative to help him set a timer on his phone so he would have a clear reminder. She also made sure his hearing aids were plugged in and charging so he could communicate more comfortably and effectively.
These examples reflect the way Macie cares for all of her patients—with compassion, respect, integrity, justice, and dignity. She is truly a walking example of our organization’s core values, and her dedication makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those she serves.
Macie was bright and cheerful the entire time she was my nurse. It’s so easy to just do a JOB, but she really cared about my well-being. She had numerous patients to take care of but always took time to deal with my needs.
Thank you, Macie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
