Thanks to her swift actions and exceptional care, a life was saved that day.
I am writing this letter of commendation to formally recognize and honor Lunien (Lulu) Villeda Lemus for her extraordinary, heroic actions that resulted in saving a man’s life. As an Engineer Paramedic with the City of Long Beach Fire Department, I believe it is imperative that such selfless and exemplary conduct does not go unnoticed. While off duty and exercising at LA Fitness in Garden Grove, Ms. Villeda observed a man suddenly collapse and suffer a cardiac arrest. Without hesitation, she immediately assessed the situation, initiated emergency care, and applied an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). She delivered a shock to the patient, at which point I continued cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Shortly thereafter, we achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Due to the rapid, coordinated, and professional care provided, the patient ultimately regained consciousness and walked to the gurney prior to transport.

Throughout the incident, Ms. Villeda demonstrated exceptional composure, leadership, and clinical judgment. She remained calm, effectively orchestrated the response, and worked seamlessly with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcome. Her training, experience, and professionalism as a Registered Nurse at Long Beach Memorial were clearly evident. Following the successful transfer of care to Orange County Fire Authority paramedics, she quietly returned to her workout, seeking no attention or recognition. Despite her humility, it is precisely this selflessness that warrants recognition. Ms. Villeda exemplifies the highest standards of the nursing profession and of healthcare providers as a whole. Whether in a hospital setting or off duty in the community, she consistently demonstrates a commitment to saving lives, teamwork, and service above self. Thanks to her swift actions and exceptional care, a life was saved that day. I am profoundly grateful that Ms. Villeda was present, and I firmly believe she should be recognized as a true life-saving hero.
