His actions go far beyond clinical skill - they reflect humanity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his patients' well-being.
We had a patient admitted to our floor with bilateral trench foot. He was also experiencing homelessness and had only one pair of shoes and socks. Living in Northern Arizona during the winter, with snowstorms approaching, created an extremely challenging situation for healing outside the hospital. Lucas is a charge nurse on our unit who consistently takes the time to truly talk with his patients. Because of that intentional connection, he learned that this patient had only one pair of shoes and socks, and that they happened to wear the same size. The next time Lucas returned to work, he quietly brought in a brand-new pair of tennis shoes from home that he had never worn, along with socks. He handed them to the patient without seeking recognition or praise. When I told him how incredibly thoughtful this was, he simply said, "How else is the patient going to fully heal? I wasn't using them anyway." To Lucas, it may have felt like a small act. In reality, it was much more. To this patient, it was dignity. It was warmth. It was the opportunity to heal. Lucas could have sold those shoes or kept them for himself, but instead, he chose compassion. He chose advocacy. He chose to give them to a patient in need, ensuring that discharge did not mean returning to harm. Lucas exemplifies what nursing is meant to be. His actions go far beyond clinical skill - they reflect humanity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to his patients' well-being. He does not just treat conditions; he cares for people. Lucas truly embodies what it means to be a nurse who goes above and beyond.
