I first met Lu Ann Barbee when I accompanied my great niece to her oncology, chemo, and surgeon's appointments beginning in October when she was diagnosed with aggressive inflammatory breast cancer.
Meeting with Lu Ann each time was necessary for my niece. Lu Ann inquired about any disturbing symptoms, health, finances, anxieties, and provided sound, dependable advice. She introduced us to two cancer funds, which provided a central financial support prior to approval for social security disability benefits.
These encounters continued to the next year, and LuAnn became a beloved, valued, concerned family friend. At a critical time in my niece's health decline, she refused to leave her home beginning in December or seek treatment. Lu Ann was the only person she was willing to speak with.
After a failed ER visit when she was mistakenly diagnosed with depression and discharged having no wish to harm herself, I did not know what to do. Lu Ann suggested a visit to BHD Emergency Department where she joined me and dissuaded the attending physician from another depression diagnosis. He ordered a CAT Scan and the brain cancer was diagnosed. She was admitted thanks to Lu Ann.
This exceptional deed is why I write to nominate Lu Ann for recognition. It was possible because of the lengthy, caring investment made in supporting a patient.
