Loren was thoughtful, compassionate, and patient while using technology to provide exceptional care that made the patient feel comfortable, included, seen, and heard.
During one of our clinical days on the Labor & Delivery unit, Loren was caring for a patient who only spoke Mandarin. The patient had just delivered her first baby, and Loren was tasked with completing a postpartum head-to-toe assessment.
Instead of asking for a different patient or requesting an extension to complete the head-to-toe assessment on a different day, she took the initiative to find an effective way to communicate and educate the first-time mom.
Loren inquired about the hospital translation device, but the device was unavailable. She then opted to use the Google Translate function on my and the patient's personal cell phones to communicate and complete the assignment.
Using the app, Loren was able to explain the head-to-toe assessment to the patient while also explaining the significance of her findings. Loren quickly built a strong rapport with the patient.
The patient had not been out of bed after her delivery, and Loren quickly determined that the patient's lower abdominal pain and deviated uterus indicated the patient's need to void and empty her bladder.
Rather than wait for the primary nurse to assist the patient out of bed, she asked me for assistance. I gladly provided minimal guidance on safety measures to assist the patient out of bed.
Loren took the initiative to assist the patient out of bed to the bathroom to void and provided instructions in effective perineal care, comfort measures for the patient's perineal laceration, voiding frequency, and signs of excessive vaginal bleeding, all while using the translation app.
The patient was very appreciative, engaged, and participatory in the head-to-toe assessment and teaching moments. The patient asked questions, clarified instructions, and shared details of her birth story with Loren.
It was evident that the patient felt comfortable and confident with Loren because she was able to communicate in her native language. Loren was thoughtful, compassionate, and patient while using technology to provide exceptional care that made the patient feel comfortable, included, seen, and heard.
It was truly an amazing experience to witness as an instructor. I was deeply moved by Loren's compassion and willingness to go above and beyond.
