A patient was admitted to the hospital while visiting Key West with his family after receiving chemotherapy. With clearance from his oncologist, he had one wish: to travel to Key West and see the beautiful water. While the ED was giving a report to the ICU, they mentioned this patient's dream to see our beautiful waters. Despite the patient being in critical condition, sedated, and on life support, this team made every effort to honor this patient’s wishes- a water view!

The family was overwhelmed by the compassion, efforts, and awareness of his wish. They complimented that this was so special to them, and they knew it would be to their father as well. They had every hope that he would open his eyes to see this view. As days went by and our team of nurses and providers worked tirelessly on him, he did open his eyes, and to his surprise, he was not only surrounded by his loved ones, but staring right at the Key West waters. What a sight! Throughout his days with us, the ICU nurses would move his bed to the window to get the perfect view. His family mentioned how grateful they were for the exceptional care and compassion delivered to both him and all of them. They said, “You would never see nurses go above and beyond like this in our hospitals at home.”

As this patient grew stronger, he was discharged from our facility. The family kept in touch to share his progress. They again shared their appreciation and how much it meant to celebrate one more birthday with their loving father. The unwavering compassion bestowed upon this patient and family will forever be engraved in their hearts. This recognition is a testament to the exemplary compassion, collaboration, support, genuine care, and dedication provided to our patients and families. Continuously going above and beyond while providing exceptional care during joyful and difficult times is at the heart of what we do in our Intensive Care. We are incredibly proud of our team and the meaningful impact on not just this one family, but all of our patients and families in our care.
