Lizz Hubbs, BSN, RN

Lizz Hubbs and I have worked together for several years, and she consistently goes above and beyond for her patients and colleagues. However, this particular case was especially meaningful and truly exemplifies the kind of nurse and person she is.

Lizz and I shared the care of a patient over the course of several days and weeks. She cared for the patient during the night shift while I was the day nurse. The patient and family were incredibly kind, but the case itself was complicated and emotionally difficult. At one point during the admission, comfort measures were ordered, and the family was understandably overwhelmed with emotion. Both Lizz and I were deeply affected by the situation as well.

Throughout this time, Lizz demonstrated extraordinary compassion and support - not only for the patient and family, but for me as a colleague. We had difficult conversations with the family and worked together to provide comfort and guidance during such a painful time. Toward the end of the admission, Lizz came to work early not only to be present for the family, but also to support me. During that shift, she checked in with me and made sure I had the support I needed as well.

During such a heartbreaking case, we leaned on one another. What stood out most was her genuine empathy and passion for the work we do. Those are qualities that cannot be taught. Lizz leads by example every day, and because of her influence, I have become a more empathetic and kinder nurse. Lizz held a family member as they cried, thought about the patient and family even when she was off shift, attended the patient's funeral, and supported me through the emotional process of end-of-life care. Her compassion extends far beyond the walls of this hospital. I truly value Lizz, not only as a nurse, but as a person. Her love for people and dedication to her patients and coworkers deserve to be recognized and celebrated.
