Lisa helped make her comfortable by giving her meds, she found her a fan and an ice pack and updated my father-in-law and me frequently.
I would like to nominate Lisa Simon from the main ED for a DAISY Award for her compassionate care of my mother-in-law last week. Lisa was genuine and compassionate with her care of my family member. My mother-in-law arrived at TGH via EMS as a STEMI alert. She passed out at work, hit her head, and was found in her office by a co-worker. She was unresponsive at the time she was found. In the ED, she was quickly ruled out for a STEMI and had become more alert and was talking. She was found to have a subdural hematoma from hitting her head when she fell. She had a significant amount of pain in her head and Lisa helped make her comfortable by giving her meds, she found her a fan and an ice pack and updated my father-in-law and me frequently. My mother-in-law started to deteriorate and there became a need to urgently intubate her. Lisa was calm, cool, and collected. She asked us to step out and said she would find us when we could come back to see her- and she did. She updated us on the plan with kindness and compassion. She urgently prepared her for surgery and answered all of our questions. Even though I am a nurse, it was scary to see my loved one in that situation and Lisa really did everything she could to help us stay informed and calm. I want to also add- the ED was on bypass during this entire time. The pressure to see more patients than we have the capacity for is REAL and hard. Lisa never made us feel as though she was too busy or couldn’t talk to us. I know she had other patients and other families to also care for and she did that flawlessly. Thank you to Lisa and the leadership team in the ED for keeping our patients safe, our families informed and updated, and doing it with compassion.
