She would bring them small treats, letting them know they were thought of and helping them feel safe in the space where their mother received care.
Lisa Hernandez, Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN), exemplifies kindness, compassion, and professionalism. Her calm demeanor and steady presence provide healing and comfort to patients navigating the challenges of cancer.

Lisa recently supported a patient through a breast cancer diagnosis, leaving a deep and lasting impact. The patient called to share how Lisa's involvement transformed her care experience and even expressed a desire to raise awareness about the ONN role. She said, "Lisa has been instrumental in the success of my care and cancer treatment. She has been such a unifier - bringing the members of my health care team together and keeping everyone updated about me." Although the patient had a strong support system, she acknowledged that many patients do not—and emphasized how crucial the ONN role is in filling that gap.
Lisa is bilingual and consistently advocates for patients from underserved communities. At a recent event at the April Sampson Cancer Center, Lisa welcomed a group from El Centro de las Americas. She interpreted for the Spanish-speaking attendees, ensuring they felt comfortable, informed, and empowered to pursue cancer screenings without fear or uncertainty.

Her dedication extends far beyond medical navigation. Lisa has provided compassionate care to a young, primarily Spanish-speaking mother undergoing breast cancer treatment. Lisa went out of her way to visit the patient's very young children during their mother's appointments. I had the privilege of witnessing the joy on their faces when they saw Lisa during a recent radiation therapy session. She would bring them small treats, letting them know they were thought of and helping them feel safe in the space where their mother received care.

Lisa pours her heart into everything she does. She co-facilitates our survivorship class, A Time to Heal, helping patients transition to life after treatment. She also actively supports cancer support groups and community outreach efforts, always bringing warmth and energy to the team.

Lisa is not only a skilled oncology nurse but a compassionate advocate, educator, and unifier. Her impact reaches far beyond clinical care, and she truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award. We are incredibly fortunate to have her as part of the Cancer Program at ASCC.
