Thanks to Lindsey, this patient was able to get the transplant they needed to live.
Lindsey O’Bryan, a registered nurse in the Integrated Medicine Unit, received a DAISY Award for her commitment to a patient receiving a liver transplant.

A patient was slated to receive a liver transplant at an outside facility, but there had been a breakdown in communication, and it wasn’t clear who the accepting physician was at the receiving hospital.

Lindsey contacted the on-call attending, but it had become the night shift. The physician didn’t know, either. She took it upon herself to page the daytime physician at 10:15 p.m. – and got the name, making it possible for the patient to be transported.

But there was another obstacle. It wasn’t clear if insurance would cover the ambulance ride to the receiving hospital.

So, the patient and their family traveled to the outside hospital by private vehicle, then called O’Bryan directly to let her know they arrived safely. They also thanked her for her actions and spoke of the bond she created with them.

During the process, the patient remarked, “You don't really start thinking about how much you haven't lived until a doctor gives you a certain amount of time to live.”

Thanks to O’Bryan, this patient was able to get the transplant they needed to live.
