Lindsey guided me to my car. She was truly with me every step of the way.
I was a Trauma Unit patient for 14 days. I received exceptional Nursing care from Day 1. The first couple of days, I was a less-than-optimal patient. P and J were extremely patient and helpful in my first couple of days. They deserve a tremendous "thank you". But I really want to highlight Lindsey, who joined the rotation around day 3 or 4. Besides her tremendous clinical knowledge, Lindsey acted as the center point of my care. She diligently brought together the Trauma Team, the Neurosurgeons, the PT/OT, and the Case Manager to provide me with one voice for my care.
A simple, but meaningful example....following my spinal fusion, the Neurosurgeon told me, "Don't sit up or move from your bed without your body brace." That message was not shared with the rest of my care team. So, I called Lindsey, who immediately got ahold of the Neurosurgeons, got their instructions, and was able to share that with my PT team. That same story played out again the following morning as the Trauma Team doctors made their rounds. Lindsey, once again, stepped in and explained the Neurosurgeon's instructions.
As my stay progressed, I knew I could turn to Lindsey to get a consistent answer. That was again highlighted during my discharge. Lindsey stayed after hours and made it smooth. As the afternoon passed, Lindsey stepped up to coordinate all the details. Lindsey substituted for the Occupational Therapist who had no one available. Without the use of my left arm, Lindsey gave me some tips on getting my socks on and tying my shoes - better yet, just wear your favorite slippers. Lindsey also helped coordinate my medications. It was already after 1800...the VHC Pharmacy does not take Tricare, and the military pharmacies were all closed for the weekend. Lindsey helped me find the closed pharmacy. A night without my pain medication would have been a long night. Additionally, Lindsey contacted Home Nursing Care to ensure we got care scheduled over the weekend. Finally, Lindsey guided me to my car. She was truly with me every step of the way.
