She brought comfort to his wife, assuring her that she was not giving up on her husband. She wept with them, laughed with them, hugged them, and supported them through what were undoubtedly the most difficult days and decisions they would face.
Lindsay is one of the most phenomenal nurses that I have ever met and I want you to know that your hospital could not be what it is without her! Every single patient, and their families, would benefit from having her as a nurse... Unfortunately, my dear friend is no longer with us to tell you this story himself, but I promised him that I would make sure that Lindsay was recognized and made to understand his deep gratitude….After a fierce battle with cancer, the doctor recommended having hospice come in and talk to them…..Lindsay went well beyond her duties and made an extremely personal connection with the patient and his family. She spoke with them and shared the story of losing her own mother and the driving forces behind her passion for caring for people who may be facing the end of their lives. She helped them understand that it was not giving up, or throwing in the towel, but it was recognizing in her words “that death is inevitable, and while we can’t prevent it, sometimes we are given the ability to make sure our deaths are how we want them to be.” She spent so much extra time with them talking about not having shame in acknowledging that you are tired of being tired, that you are hurting more than you let on, and that you can no longer fight like you’ve been fighting. She helped him understand that he was not letting his family down and that it was ok to start to focus on feeling more comfortable and increasing his “quality of life when you know that your quantity of life is limited”. She brought comfort to his wife, assuring her that she was not giving up on her husband. She wept with them, laughed with them, hugged them, and supported them through what were undoubtedly the most difficult days and decisions they would face. He told me that it was as if Lindsay could read his mind and knew exactly what his family needed. The way that he described this to me was as if he was describing an angel sent straight from heaven for him and his family during their greatest time of need….I promised him that I would share this story, and I would make sure that she was recognized and understood that her efforts were not in vain, were not taken for granted, and how truly thankful he was for her…I can tell you that some people will forever remember this and will choose your hospital because of her. I would even venture that some will ask for her, I know that if I am there, or my loved one is there, I will want no one but Lindsay.
