Because of her quick thinking and understanding of his fear, he remained calm, didn’t cry, and held perfectly still.
I would like to recognize Lila Aguilar from the Kids Express department for her exceptional care and compassion.
Recently, my son needed lab work completed through Kids Express. He was extremely anxious about the experience—so much so that he was in tears two nights prior to our visit. In an effort to help ease his fears, I even stopped by the department the day before to ask if there were any additional ways I could prepare him. As both his mother and a pediatric nurse, I was worried he might be inconsolable and that the team would be unable to complete the lab draw successfully. The staff reassured me that he would be okay—but Lila exceeded every expectation.
On the morning of our visit, Lila made the entire experience seamless. She thoughtfully explained each step in a way that addressed my son's worries and helped him feel more in control. She demonstrated the numbing spray first on me, then on herself, and finally on him, building his trust every step of the way. Her calm and patient approach was remarkable.
The moment that truly stood out was just before the draw. He was unable to look away, so Lila gently covered the site with her hand to shield his view. Because of her quick thinking and understanding of his fear, he remained calm, didn’t cry, and held perfectly still. I could not have asked for a better experience.
As a fellow staff member, I have always known how incredible our pediatric nurses are. However, witnessing this level of care as a parent was deeply meaningful. Lila’s compassion, skill, and dedication are a true reflection of the exceptional, world-class care that Methodist Children’s Hospital is known for.
