Once the crisis was over and the nurse went back to assess his other patients, he learned that Liezl had quietly gone about tending to his other patients and even did the morning med pass so medications were not late.
I have worked with Liezl for many years. I have always known her to be a hard worker. She is very attentive to her patients and is helpful to her coworkers in any way she is able. Liezl never brings drama to the workplace. Now, this may seem like an obvious and expected attribute, but for anyone who's worked here, you know it can get pretty dramatic.
We aren't the floor with the most acutely ill patients, but we are one of the floors with the highest nurse-to-patient ratios and one of the floors with the most diverse patient populations—and by diverse, I mean in all the ways: age, demographics, diagnoses, etc.
One day in particular, Liezl was working as a break nurse (in all likelihood, this was an extra shift, as in addition to working hard on regularly scheduled days, she is also one to come in repeatedly as extra when needed), and it was B-U-S-Y. I happened to be working as relief charge nurse, and one of our staff nurses had a patient requiring an assessment by the rapid response team. Of course, this was all taking place just after the morning shift change, so the staff nurse's attention was focused on this acute situation, which ended up taking most of the morning.
Once the crisis was over and the nurse went back to assess his other patients, he learned that Liezl had quietly gone about tending to his other patients and even did the morning med pass so medications were not late. She was able to see what was needed and just jumped in to take care of it. She did this while also helping other nurses on the floor as needed.
I know this seems like the expectation—and it is. It’s not that other nurses don't do this, but it's the way she does it: quietly, confidently, CONSISTENTLY. She goes above and beyond—EVERY TIME!! She is the whole package: friendly, helpful, dependable, knowledgeable, experienced, and hard-working.
Sometimes, the quiet ones don't get the recognition they so deserve, and that's one of the reasons I would love to see her receive the DAISY Award. She doesn't do anything for the acknowledgment; she just does the right and good thing. But I think she deserves to be celebrated.
