Leyce Verceles has been a God send to our family throughout my mom's medical journey at the University of Chicago. Throughout my mom's extensive stay, Leyne was often her night nurse, working tirelessly, endlessly, and compassionately to care for her. What began as a complex surgery turned into many complications, extreme weakness, as well as other medical problems along the way. Leyce would always ensure my mom was cared for in the gentlest and kindest ways. She would make sure she was always clean and presentable. She would complement the braid in her hair and come running in at the sound of distress. She reassured my dad and me when we were overwhelmed with different doctors and teams coming and going at all hours of the day and night. Leyce treated my mom and family as though we were members of her own family. She amazed us with her vast knowledge and skills. We trusted her as though she was one of my mom's doctors. After my mom was transferred to another floor, Leyce brought us down to make sure the transport was gentle, and the nurses on the new floor were well aware of her strict needs. Leyce also picked up a shift on that floor and was able to care for my mom again. My dad (who doesn't show too much emotion) was ecstatic to see her walk in the door as my mom's nurse. we will never forget her kind heart, gentle caregiving, positive attitude, upbeat personality, and the love she gave to my mom!
