Lena's hard work and dedication to her patient that day were very moving.
I would like to nominate Lena Scott for a DAISY Award for her demonstration of outstanding care and compassion. I spoke with the patient prior to writing this nomination, and she was happy for her experience to be shared.
For some background, Ms. B has been at Methodist South for several months due to multiple complications post-op, resulting in several ICU admissions and fights with sepsis. She has remained resilient and hopeful, both in improvements and in setbacks. However, as we all know, the hospital is not a comfortable place and comes with restrictions for things that many of us take for granted. Ms. B has voiced appreciation for small things, such as enjoying a cold Coke, good food, and simply being able to go outside and see the sunshine. I was assisting MRT the day before Ms. B had her first complication, and I vividly remember her recounting how happy she was to go outside and enjoy the weather.
Lena had been taking care of Ms. B several times over the past couple of weeks and did everything she safely could to keep her spirits high. From advocating for a more effective pain regimen, working with dietary to get one of Ms. B's greatest pleasures (Dr. Pepper), to spending 20 minutes changing an IV dressing so that the adhesive did not hurt her sensitive skin. She honored every commitment and cared for Ms. B with compassion, never seeing these requests as a bother, but as an opportunity to brighten her day. However, it was the most recent request that Lena helped come true that I believe is a DAISY moment.
Ms. B voiced that she wished to go outside and just enjoy the sun and the fresh air. Instead of writing it off as too unsafe for an ICU patient, Lena collaborated with multiple disciplines to come up with a safe plan in order for Ms. B's wish to come true. Early the next day, Lena procured a means to transport Ms. B, associates to assist with getting her outside, and approval from the Intensivist team and unit management. Her hard work that day culminated in Ms. B getting her wish, enjoying the sunshine, and having friendly conversations with multiple people from her care team.
Lena's hard work and dedication to her patient that day were very moving. It is always amazing to see people go the extra mile just to bring happiness to someone else. Lena very easily could have dismissed Ms. B's request as impossible; instead, she put forth effort and compassion. I'm grateful to have her as part of the team. Thank you!
