Not only did Leia advocate for her patient, but she also took the time to make the grieving process easier for both her patient and their family.
Leia was taking care of a young patient who had an emergency C Section at LMC and was transferred to TMC after she developed uncontrolled bleeding. Unfortunately, the baby was not viable at birth and had died in utero. This patient was transferred while her deceased baby stayed at LMC. Leia advocated and reached out to several leaders to help get the baby transferred to TMC so that the parents could grieve and say goodbye to the baby they thought they would be taking home when they arrived at the hospital. Once the baby was transferred from LMC to TMC, Leia took a special outfit that the parents had and dressed the infant in it. Not only did Leia advocate for her patient, but she also took the time to make the grieving process easier for both her patient and their family. Losing a baby is harrowing and heartbreaking. This family endured a trauma and loss that will shape them forever. Leia took the time to show empathy and compassion, ensuring they could grieve and have the resources they needed. Leia made this really difficult time a little easier for this young family. Leia went above and beyond; she does this every day. I have seen Leia help others with a smile, boost others when they are having a hard day, and be so gentle and caring to her patients, even when she thinks no one is watching. She ensures her patients are comfortable, her families are cared for, and her teammates know she always has their backs. This was a challenging case and a tough day, but Leia didn’t stop advocating. She is truly a great nurse. I’m honored to call her a teammate and peer. Leia truly embodies what it means to be a DAISY Award Nominee.
