My new expectation for patient advocacy has been set due to witnessing Capt. Paine's dedication and determination.
Capt. Paine took care of an intubated patient for several days. She not only had great rapport with the patient’s family, she was a huge advocate for this patient and his safety. It’s always frightening to think your family member has zero say in their medical care due to being intubated, but it was extraordinarily easy to assure my patients family that he was receiving the best care due to Capt. Paine’s ability to advocate for this patient. She was in constant contact with the doctors, bouncing ideas off of them for ways to improve her patient’s condition, but she also raised concerns with zero hesitation.

Even when she received resistance from the doctors, she never stopped advocating for her patient. I have always heard the phrase “you advocate for your patients” but Capt. Paine was the first nurse I’ve seen who went above and beyond and was not hesitant to voice her concerns. It was amazing to witness, and the patient’s family told me how much they appreciated her and all her efforts. My new expectation for patient advocacy has been set due to witnessing her dedication and determination.
