A pregnant patient was admitted at 23 weeks' gestation for premature rupture of membranes. Due to this high-risk pregnancy, the patient was required to remain in the hospital until delivery to be closely monitored by maternal fetal specialists, her physician, and nursing staff to ensure her safety and fetal well-being. This collaboration is aligned with the hospital and nursing mission/vision to providing high quality, compassionate and patient and family-centered care and to achieve a positive experience and outcome.  Dr. Jaime Nahmias suggested in collaboration with several L&D nurses to give the patient a baby shower due to her long-term admission and not having the ability to be discharged prior to the birth of the baby.  A group of labor and delivery nurses with Leslie Kirindongo as the lead, planned the surprise baby shower which included a well decorated baby boy themed classroom along with food, gifts and the patient’s husband & family members.

The patient’s physician, Dr. Nahmias, has a huge heart and wanted to do something nice for his patient, so he donated funds towards the shower. The Labor and delivery nurses also wanted to make the patient feel special under these unexpected, stressful circumstances, and first pregnancy.

Dr. Nahmais and the Labor and Delivery nurses made this patient feel very comfortable, almost like family during her stay. Everyone knew her and would stop by to say "Hi" to he during her 10 weeks in the hospital. Dr. Nahmias exhibited much patience, skill and compassion throughout the patients stay to keep this patient pregnant as long as possible and for the baby to grow and develop properly.

The patient remained in the hospital until delivery at 33.3 weeks gestation.  The baby was transferred to the NICU due to prematurity and then discharged home safely three weeks later.
