Lauren Shields, RN

Our family member had surgery for a fractured femur at Baptist South. During the days after her surgery she developed mental confusion, a urinary track infection, and a heart arrhythmia. Her team of doctors, nurses, and care managers shepherded her and her family through all that. She was discharged to a rehab hospital; there she showed signs of GI bleeding and was readmitted to Baptist South. While there, she began to have blood in her urine.

All those things occurred within a period of a few days. Naturally, we family members and the patient were anxious to know all we could about what was happening. While spending hours at the bedside, I was able to see how hard her caregivers worked. While several deserved to be recognized, I have chosen the one that stands out the most in my mind to commend: Lauren Shields. She anticipated what needed to be done before we asked, and explained why, when, and how it was to be done. Lauren waited patiently as our family member, who has suffered a stroke, tried to gather her thoughts to ask questions, understand answers, and voice her concerns and needs. Her responses to our requests were prompt and courteous, with successful outcomes.
