My step-father was flown from UPMC East to UPMC Presby the afternoon of Feb 7th, after spending the night at UPMC East due to a cardiac arrest. During the night, he was transferred from the ER to CICU. The staff there was professional and informative however, they felt there was nothing more they could do at this facility. They suggested the transfer to Presby via life flight, where he could be better monitored and treated.
When we arrived at UPMC Presbyterian, we were greeted by Lauren Keating. There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this fabulous nurse we spent so much time with over the following few days. She was absolutely Above and Beyond! She sat with us, talking eye to eye, and explained everything in such detail on our level. She spoke with compassion, understanding, confidence, and knowledge. She explained every procedure, every medicine, every option, she was never rushed, as if my step father was her only patient. She gave us hope, all while keeping us realistic with the facts of his critical condition.
She held our hands, she let us cry, she helped us to smile and even laugh at times. She went out of her way to make sure we were at ease and comfortable with all the decisions that had to be made. She made sure every question was answered. She offered to help make his room more "presentable" to his grandchildren so they could visit without being scared of all the equipment. She skipped her lunch "in case" we needed her. The three days we were with her, were absolutely awful days, she made them bearable just with her presence.
My step father passed on Feb 9th. Lauren was with us, she hugged us and cried with us, and shared in our grief. That may be unprofessional but it was sincere and most appreciated and we are ever so grateful that we met Lauren. Her compassion and dedication to her patients and their families is extraordinary. She is a true role model for all your staff at such a young age. She is a true asset to UPMC and will most definitely be a positive leader in the years to come. Lauren Keating will never be forgotten.
