Laurie Shader has a heart for patients! She gets to know them as a person—when a patient has an encounter with Laurie, they know they are receiving compassionate care. Laurie is intuitive and possesses excellent critical thinking skills and assessment skills. She is quick to respond to a change in a patient’s condition. She holds the patient’s wishes in high regard and does everything she can to resolve any issues that occur.
Laurie demonstrates accountability for her actions and is always striving to do things “by the book!” She keeps up with the most updated guidelines and protocols and is a resource to other staff. Laurie is an excellent team player and works very hard to help co-workers in their day as well.
In her role of Wound Care Nurse, she is eager to teach staff about the best care for wounds and following guidelines for the most accurate documentation.
An incident that stands out in my mind about Laurie involves a suicidal patient who left the floor. Laurie noticed the patient leaving and pursued the patient, running all the way to the levy. She sat down on the grass with the patient and spoke gently as the patient cried. She convinced the patient to return to their room with her. On the way back up to the unit, the patient had a seizure and fainted. Laurie quickly obtained assistance and transported patient to ED which was the nearest critical care area. Due to Laurie’s quick intervention, the patient had a good outcome.
Laurie Shader is most definitely a DAISY nurse!
