September 2026 Honoree
Laura Amweg, BSN, RN
My husband has been a patient at DF for years and has been treated for NHL. He had CAR T-cell therapy in 2022 and is currently in remission. However, his immune system is not up to par, so he is receiving IVIG treatments. My husband had an appointment for IVIG on May 8th. He has been struggling with a cold, bronchitis, sore throats, etc since November; he is a very complex patient with a lot of co-existing conditions. We came to his appointment, and Laura was his nurse. What an absolute angel! She went over his labs and explained what each result meant in layman’s language we could understand. She listened to all our complaints about his poor health; we explained we felt kind of lost and didn't know which way to turn or whom to call. Laura was so kind and compassionate; she hugged both of us and assured us we wouldn’t be leaving until she got us some help. Twenty minutes later, my husband’s oncologist’s assistant walked into the room, listened to us, ordered more tests, made referrals, and assured us we would figure this out. Apparently Laura reached out to her and asked her to come see us. What a relief; we left yesterday feeling like a weight was lifted off our shoulders. We have some guidance and more appointments scheduled, but we feel confident this will be figured out. Laura showed us so much compassion and understanding, taking care of so much more than just my husband's infusion. This is why we feel Laura should be recognized for being an outstanding nurse.
***
She consistently provides compassionate and personalized care. She has given me my injections several times, and I truly thank God that she is the one who takes care of me because she is always gentle, skilled, and reassuring. What touches me most is that she remembers me as a person. I once told her about my dog, and ever since, she asks about him every time I come in. Those small conversations make me feel valued and cared for, not just treated as another patient. Her kindness and genuine concern have made a stressful part of my cancer journey much easier, and I am deeply grateful for her exceptional care.
