June 2026 Honoree
Larae Schmidgall, RN, Primary Charge Nurse
Larae was my nurse when I was transferred from the Emergency Department to 6 Ortho while being treated for a bowel obstruction. During a time filled with uncertainty—whether I would require surgery or if conservative management would be enough—Larae was a constant source of comfort, reassurance, and hope. From the moment she took over my care, Larae showed genuine compassion and dedication. She advocated for me to receive appropriate pain management, helping to alleviate my suffering during some very difficult moments. She checked on me frequently, ensuring that my needs were met and that I remained as comfortable as possible. What stood out most was her commitment to keeping me informed and involved in my care.
Although I was often drowsy from pain medications, Larae took the time to make sure I understood my treatment plan and the decisions being made by the healthcare team. She never made me feel like just another patient. Instead, she listened attentively, answered my questions, and made me feel valued and respected throughout my hospitalization. Larae's knowledge, professionalism, and passion for nursing were evident in every interaction. Her ability to combine clinical expertise with heartfelt compassion gave me confidence in my care team and brought me peace of mind during a frightening and uncertain experience. She reminded me that even in difficult circumstances, hope remains. I have been hospitalized many times throughout my life, and I have encountered many excellent healthcare professionals. Nurses like Larae are rare. She possesses a special gift for caring for others and making patients feel safe, heard, and supported. I am incredibly grateful for the compassionate and genuine care she provided, and I feel fortunate to have had her as my nurse. Larae exemplifies everything the DAISY Award represents. She made a lasting impact on my healing journey, and I will always remember the kindness, comfort, and hope she gave me when I needed it most.
