I believe that sometimes people are put in other's lives at the right times for very specific reasons. This night, in the face of something terrible, Lana willingly put herself in the right place at the right time for this patient. The narrative starts with Lana having spent 10 hours on one day teaching a class and knowing she would be in class for 10 hours on the following day teaching as well. In the early morning hours, she received a call from the Emergency Department asking her to respond to the hospital to provide care for a very bad domestic violence victim. Lana is part of the Sexual Assault Team and is sometimes on call to care for sexual assault victims only.
This night Lana was not on call and this patient was not known to be a sexual assault victim. Lana, willingly agreed to come in and take care of the patient. She spent approximately 8 hours on the case while mindfully tending to the patient with expert forensic and compassionate care. She continued to follow the patient throughout her hospitalization to provide emotional support as this lady had no family. I am so grateful to Lana for coming in that night and caring for this patient even though she was not on call, was responding to a domestic violence patient which is not part of taking call and knowing she had a long day ahead of her. This victim truly needed the expert and compassionate care that Lana provided. Some superheroes don't wear capes or have superhuman super powers. Lana was a super hero for that patient on that night and there is no one more deserving of this DAISY Award than Lana.
