This test would not have even come up if Lacie had not listened to me during the day and knew we needed answers.
Today, as I was rounding, Lacie and K just arrived at the nurse’s station with sentimental gifts of an angel in a tree and a picture with a Bible verse for a terminal patient. They also had a stuffed animal for another very ill patient. I asked them if they had a special connection with these patients. They both smiled and said no, that they do this for all their terminal or really sick patients. I asked if the purchase of these gifts was out of pocket, and they shared they do this and that it is the least they can do to show their patient they are special. This is such an incredible act of selflessness, compassion, and kindness. The fact that they do this out of their own wallet highlights the extreme amount of compassion that they have for their patients and families during the most difficult times. I am very proud to say I work with such caring human beings!

Lacie is so special because she was there when I needed her most. I have been battling mental health issues for many years. It's gotten worse since my mother passed away. I dropped into a deep depression. Then, I found out even more about my brain aneurysm. Neuropathy made it hard to walk. I tried to get help, but I just realized how alone I was. Being recently diagnosed as being bipolar, depressed, and having anxiety, I went into a bad cycle and ended up in the hospital three times in six months. I felt I didn't belong there because it was only depression!
On the last trip, Lacie was there for me. She was a kind face in the storm. She listened to me, and that made me feel that I should be there at the hospital with her. She could tell I was having a bad day. I have no family around here, and they don't understand, but she did. So, when she walked up with the cutest bouquet of flowers, I was shocked. My family didn't even know I was here. They were from her. She made my whole week and year. I really needed it, and she could tell. Sometimes, all you need is that smile.

To start with, Lacie is very pleasant and easy to understand. She did not look down on me for being here. Lacie actually listened to me and spoke to the doctors to get me help. When the hospitalist wanted me to go home on a Tuesday, my wife got really upset. Lacie was there for both my wife and myself. She helped explain that this was the 4th time I was in the hospital in five months. I needed answers, and we were tired of being sent home early. We needed answers. After my wife snapped at the doctor, Lacie offered words of support to my wife. It was determined I would stay another day. Thank God for Lacie.
On Wednesday, the lung specialist had the idea to do a swallow test. It now appears to be that I have acid reflux, and that may be the ultimate cause. This test would not have even come up if Lacie had not listened to me during the day and knew we needed answers. I truly believe that she not only has made a path for me to get completely well but may have saved my life! Thank you, Lacie Sowers!
