Kurt Soergel received a very sick patient one night. The patient arrived at the unit, and within minutes, he got the patient settled and stabilized. Once he did that, he called in the family, which were beside themselves. He reassured them that their mother was in good hands and let them stay and ask as many questions as they needed. They went from being very upset and nervous to relieved and at ease. Once they knew they could trust Kurt, they went home for the night to get some rest. Kurt used his critical thinking skills to stabilize the patient while also being able to show his true compassion and put the patient and their family first. Advocating for patients when they cannot do so is one of the most important jobs of a bedside nurse, and Kurt showed that in this particular situation, along with sincere compassion and care.
