In addition to being there with him, making sure he never felt alone, Krystal went above and beyond to ensure this patient had the comfort he needed during this difficult time from loved ones at his previous facility even when they were not able to physically be there with him.
Krystal Thompson is an extraordinary nurse that I have the pleasure to work with. Last week she was caring for a patient that was transitioning from full care to comfort care per family wishes. This patient did not have any local family for visits and resided in a nursing home prior to admission so Krystal made the extra effort to be with this patient throughout the day but most importantly during this transition. As fate would have it, Krystal also cared for this patient at the facility where the patient resided and was able to communicate condition changes when the facility would reach out. Once the decision was made to transition to comfort care, the appropriate drips were discontinued, the mechanical ventilator was removed, Krystal was able to connect with one of the patient's favorite nurses at the previous facility while the patient's vitals were maintaining. She placed the nurse on speaker so that the patient could hear her. The nurse provided a comfort to the patient, talked about him having his own farm in heaven with as many ice cream sandwiches he could want, and that it was okay to rest. As soon as they ended the conversation and hung up the phone, the patient declined very quickly and he peacefully passed, almost as if he needed to hear those words in order to rest. In addition to being there with him, making sure he never felt alone, Krystal went above and beyond to ensure this patient had the comfort he needed during this difficult time from loved ones at his previous facility even when they were not able to physically be there with him. She goes above and beyond daily for her patients and would be very deserving of a DAISY Award.
