The CVICU nurses are trained to take care of the complex issues around our heart transplant patients, and they do it excellently day in and day out. Sometimes, there are patients whose complexity demands more than excellent care. The patient who inspired me to submit this nomination is a 14-year-old girl who had a heart transplant in early 2024 and endured a severe and complex CMV infection, resulting in multi-organ failure. Through trial and error, we discovered that the CRRT for her renal failure and hyperammonemia was working at cross purposes with her CMV treatment. To provide proper care for our patient’s CMV infection, we required a series of precisely timed PK labs. Kristy took the direction and carried them out precisely and with a great attitude despite the added work on top of her CRRT and other nursing obligations. Kristy and two other nurses, over the past few days, continued to provide excellent care and compassion to our patient, who was anxious with every medical procedure; at times, so exhausted and frustrated with the pain she expressed her desire to die to the nurses. She required an increasingly complex array of tasks to support her through her disease. Despite all of this, the nursing team, especially Kristy, carried it all with a positive attitude and compassion for the patient.
