I wanted to recognize Kristi for the exceptional job she did communicating with a family during a code on their loved one in the ICU at the end of January. This was the third time a rapid and/or code had been called on this patient during my shift. As you can imagine, the family was very distraught and overwhelmed. There were multiple family members standing outside of the patient's room, witnessing the team working hard on their loved one. Kristi came out of the room and was explaining to the family what was happening. She walked them through step-by-step and explained why the team was doing what they were doing. She allowed them to ask questions and answered every one in a genuinely caring manner. I was impressed with the way she empathetically listened to each family member and walked them through one of the hardest days in their lives. Unfortunately, this patient passed away. Kristi continued to help them through the entire process and offered all the support she could. She truly provided extraordinary care for the family of this patient. The genuine and heartfelt care I witnessed is something that all nurses should strive to give. Kristi not only provides wonderful care to patients and families, but is also a nurse and house supervisor who, as a staff nurse, has your back. She will help you through any situation so that you are able to provide the best care for the patient and, as a nurse, you feel cared for too.
