Koryna and her amazing team stabilized her, and my wife was rushed to emergency surgery.
Koryna Tirado is an RRT RN. That’s a lot of Rs, but it means that she’s a Registered Nurse working with a Rapid Response Team. Koryna is also one of our very best. Given our exacting standards and the high caliber of our nursing staff, that’s no small compliment. Neither is it idle praise. This is the second time Koryna’s received a DAISY Award, and in all the years the program has been in place, only one other nurse can claim that distinction. The underlying circumstances for Koryna’s two awards couldn’t be more different, but the impact of her actions was equally meaningful. In the first instance, a patient and his family were facing an end-of-life was at issue. In the second, a child had just been born.
Rapid Response Teams provide emergency medical care to those patients not already in the ICU or the Emergency Department. When not responding to a sudden patient crisis, RRT RNs make rounds of non-critical units to assess patients and canvass nurses for questions and concerns. Koryna was rounding on the Postpartum Unit and looked in on a patient she’d seen the previous day. Her initial concern about the patient’s reports of worsening pain quickly grew to a sense of alarm when she also noted the patient’s disorientation, heightened body temperature, rapid breathing, and heart rate. These are classic symptoms of sepsis, and she immediately called in the rest of the Rapid Response Team.
According to the patient’s husband, “Koryna transferred my wife to the ICU, where she was diagnosed with an infection so severe she nearly died. Koryna and her amazing team stabilized her, and my wife was rushed to emergency surgery. It’s been a long road with a cardiac arrest, more surgeries, 24/7 dialysis, and hospitalizations elsewhere for specialized treatment. But because of Koryna, my children still have a mother. She was professional, comforting, and assuring. She saved us.”
We often find that it isn’t just the patient under our care, but their loved ones as well. In this instance, a whole family’s future hung in the balance, and Koryna came through for them. We join them in gratitude. Sometimes it’s simply an honor to honor someone, and we got to do it twice. R is also for Rewarding.
