Kim has profoundly impacted over 10,000 patients throughout her nursing career, making a difference not only to the patients but also to their families.
Kim started her nursing journey in May 2002 on the Transplant Unit at the University of Colorado Hospital on the 9th Ave Campus as a nurse in the Nurse Graduate Residency Program. From the day she began caring for patients, Kim displayed the gifts of patience, healing, and leadership. She quickly became a permanent charge nurse and embarked on her leadership path, mentoring, precepting, and supporting every staff member who has worked on the THTSU.
Kim's leadership has stabilized the unit through four relocations and many leadership changes, and her integrity and standards of care have never wavered. Her calm demeanor and expertise have provided supportive leadership that always prioritizes patients amidst all changes. Kim has taught classes on transplant topics for both experienced and novice staff, led numerous journal clubs, and attended and presented at international conferences. She has contributed to the rollout of technology, processes, and skills during her years as a charge nurse, actively seeking opportunities to further her education and promote educational initiatives for her staff.
She has credentialed through UEXCEL to become a Level III charge nurse. For each patient discharge, Kim has established a tradition of gifting a transplant "tree of life" necklace or charm, symbolizing the bonds formed within the unit and serving as a reminder of the family atmosphere they have cultivated together. Kim has profoundly impacted over 10,000 patients throughout her nursing career, making a difference not only to the patients but also to their families. Additionally, she collaborated with a deceased patient’s husband to procure a memorial bell for future transplant patients to ring upon discharge, a highlight for patients, families, and staff, symbolizing accomplishment and new beginnings.
Kimberly Ruby improves lives in countless ways, both big and small. Selfless in her care, she never seeks glory or recognition for her work. As an exceptional nurse, role model, and advocate, she truly deserves the DAISY Award, representing the epitome of UCHealth!
