As a family, sitting with our sister in comfort care was a physical, spiritual, and emotional struggle. During this time, we were truly amazed by the kindness and compassion of the team on 4 East. Staff answered our questions with patience and reassurance that our loved one would be cared for in the best possible way. Nurses took care of our loved one, but also continually asked what they could do for us as a family. Everyone from the doctors to the chaplains to the nursing team went above and beyond to help us along this journey. While everyone was great, one nurse stood out with her actions. Kim Burns was the nurse we worked with the most consistently, and she was our angel. She always spoke to our sister with a soothing voice, letting her know what she was doing. She used little touches like keeping a soft light on above the bed to give her spirit a direction to go. She kept the door closed as well as the shade for our privacy while we were at the bedside, but every time we’d leave late at night, Kim would open the shades and move her chair to the door to assure us our loved one would not pass alone. Kim sees her patients as people and is a light and example of truly compassionate care. Kim encapsulates everything that the DAISY award stands for.
