This is a story of a young nurse just beginning her career who was extraordinary in her care for my husband, displaying maturity and skill beyond her years. After a readmission to the hospital to control cancer pain, my husband had a very difficult night. Kylie, his Night Shift nurse, very perceptively, realized that this was not just physical pain, and she took the time to discuss with him, his anxieties and fears, reassuring him that there was a team of healthcare professionals working to resolve the pain and providing him with ways to think about the future as he was beginning his treatments. My husband told me later that her gestures of concern enabled him to calm down, diminishing the pain he was experiencing. Kylie shared her concerns about him with me the next day, giving me a much-needed and appreciated hug. The next evening, when Kylie came on duty, she had a gift for us and proceeded to tell us how she had just come across that day the following expression-"Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase". What an appropriate and timely message it was for both of us to hear. She then handed us a card with these words of wisdom that she had made. It is prominently displayed in our home to remind us each day of the need to remain focused on the here and now- and a lovely reminder of Kylie! Kylie’s maturity, coupled with a deep compassion for people, makes her an Extraordinary Nurse; lucky are those who find themselves in her care!
