She taught the patient how to FaceTime, and when his wife answered the phone, they all burst into tears- including his nurse.
Recently, we had a patient on the unit who was hospitalized for nearly 60 days. One day, Kerri Johns was caring for this patient and his wife, and he was telling Kerri about their grandchild and how the wife would be able to keep the grandchild overnight. The patient expressed sadness to his nurse over not being able to see his grandbaby. The wife stated the patient gets to see pictures every day, but the patient said it just wasn't the same. Hearing this, his nurse suggested the patient FaceTime his wife later that afternoon so he could see the baby. The patient told her he did not know what FaceTime was. After the wife had left for the day, the nurse went back into the room to come up with a plan. She was going to help the patient learn to FaceTime so they could surprise his wife. At 4:30 that afternoon, the patient notified his nurse that the grandbaby was at their house. She taught the patient how to FaceTime, and when his wife answered the phone, they all burst into tears- including his nurse. I cared for this patient the following day, and the impact she left was evident. They asked me when she would return to work and expressed their gratitude for her excellent care. She is an outstanding nurse, and I am grateful every day for the opportunity to work with her.
