Her dedication to my grandmother’s well-being was evident in every interaction.
Our family had the privilege of experiencing her outstanding care during my grandmother’s multiple admissions to this unit. The moment I saw the poster for the DAISY Awards, I knew instantly that I had to nominate this unit — and most especially, her.
I was with my grandmother almost 16 to 24 hours a day throughout her nearly two-month confinement. I witnessed firsthand how these nurses cared for their patients. I saw how they worked closely with my grandmother and with us, her family. So here I am, giving back, in the best way I know how — by recognizing their dedication.
Kenisha is exceptionally kind, helpful, and approachable. Even on days when she wasn’t our assigned bedside nurse, I would still approach her whenever I needed help — and she was always more than willing to assist.
During our first few weeks in the hospital, my grandmother would speak only in Ilocano, a dialect that none of us — except my grandparents — could understand. It was such a blessing that this nurse, being Ilocana herself, was there. She patiently conversed with my grandmother, helping stimulate her even when my disoriented grandma was speaking incoherently. Her patience seemed endless.
My grandmother was on NGT feeding before her PEG tube was inserted, and we were always afraid she might aspirate because she moved a lot. Among all the nurses, she stood out — she never left my grandmother’s side until the feeding was done or at least halfway through. She stayed to make sure everything was safe, knowing how anxious we were. Her calmness and patience gave us so much reassurance.
Throughout our stay, she consistently demonstrated an extraordinary level of compassion and skill. Her dedication to my grandmother’s well-being was evident in every interaction. She has a remarkable ability to connect with patients on a personal level.
I clearly remember one instance when she noticed that my grandmother might be in pain, even if she couldn’t verbalize it because of her disorientation. She immediately acted and consulted the charge nurse and the attending doctor to ensure my grandmother’s comfort. Those small gestures meant a lot. They showed that her care went beyond duty — it came from the heart.
During one of the most difficult times in our lives, her presence and empathy provided us with comfort and peace of mind. Her unwavering commitment, her quiet strength, and her genuine compassion make her truly deserving of this recognition.
