Under Kelly's leadership, our unit has grown tremendously. Working in PACU doesn't feel like work, it feels like a second home. Our nurses work well together and are always looking for opportunities to help each other out.
Just over a year ago my wife and I moved to Lafayette, Indiana for her work. I decided to work for IU Arnett because of their commitment to their professional values and the community the hospital serves and so decided to apply to Post Anesthesia Care Unit. At the time the unit was going through a significant change in leadership and personnel. As part of that change in leadership our department hired a new Shift Coordinator, Kelly Whitmore.
Kelly has been a member of the PACU for several years and is one of the more senior and seasoned nurses on our unit. As the Shift Coordinator for our unit Kelly embodies the best qualities of a nurse; she is compassionate, team oriented, provides patient-centered care, and is deeply knowledgeable regarding her nursing practice in the PACU. Kelly leads her unit by example. She is, without a doubt, the first to jump up and assist anyone in need. Kelly takes pride in her unit and has a great deal of ownership of PACU and her fellow nurses. She encourages each member of her team to continue to grow in their practice and knowledge and provides her nurses with any and every opportunity to improve their skills and competencies as a nurse. Under Kelly's leadership, our unit has grown tremendously. Working in PACU doesn't feel like work, it feels like a second home. Our nurses work well together and are always looking for opportunities to help each other out.
Recently, my wife was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Unfortunately, this is not the first time our family unit has dealt with such a diagnosis. In November 2019, I received the same news, which resulted in an extensive treatment plan, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. My team members are aware of my diagnosis and have always supported my continued need for oncology care. When we found out that my wife was diagnosed and I would be needing to care for her through this process Kelly and my PACU team have stepped up to support our every need as we navigate this journey yet again.
In September, Kelly presented the Perioperative Department with Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets as a means to encourage me and my wife that we are "Not in this fight alone."
Kelly is a tremendous leader who shows the same level of compassion and care for her fellow nurses as she does for her patients. Kelly sets the example for high quality nursing care every day through her extraordinary leadership which in turn inspires her colleagues to perform at the highest levels of their capacity providing the best nursing care for our patients and their loved ones.
