If Kelly hadn't been so diligent in physically monitoring this compromised patient, we wouldn't have been able to respond so quickly to this emergent event.
Today I was out on the unit conducting mobility rounds when I noticed Kelly in her patient's room. The vital sign machine was blinking red on the patient's pulse ox, and the Charge RN was coming in with a different machine to verify its accuracy. I, of course, went into the room to see if I could help. Within seconds, the patient became unresponsive in front of us as Kelly was calling out her name and rubbing her chest. This quickly escalated into a respiratory arrest. Within seconds, we were able to unclog the patient's trach and bring her back. This story and situation highlight Kelly's attentiveness, assessment skills, and critical thinking. Kelly had been in this room for hours already this morning. She had completed an RRT on the patient and had been closely monitoring her. Even though Kelly also had 4 other patients, she made sure to station herself outside this patient's room so she could keep a physical eye on her. Kelly even pulled up her WOW so that it was inside of this patient's doorway. This was important because this patient had a tracheostomy with no vocal cord use at this time. If anything happened to this patient, she wouldn't have been able to call out for help. We also have no TMS monitoring on our rehab unit. If Kelly hadn't been so diligent in physically monitoring this compromised patient, we wouldn't have been able to respond so quickly to this emergent event. Ultimately, the quick response time led to a successful outcome. I strongly feel that Kelly's diligence and "gut instinct" that something was wrong is why this patient survived this critical event. Kelly is a consistent, strong advocate for her patients. This story shows her compassion, especially for someone who is vulnerable and cannot speak up for themselves. Kelly is an exceptional nurse and deserves recognition for the extraordinary care that she provides each day. I am so thankful and lucky to have a nurse like her on my team.
