It was such a comfort knowing that someone so caring and attentive was looking after one of the most important people to me.
During my dad's recent hospitalization at MMH for a bowel obstruction, we were truly blessed to have Kayla as his nurse. My dad was admitted to MedSurg from the ER late in the afternoon, close to shift change. One of her first challenges was placing his NG tube, which proved to be somewhat difficult. Instead of leaving it for the next shift, Kayla patiently stayed with the task, never showing frustration, until she successfully placed it and ensured my dad was comfortable before she left. Despite having worked all day, Kayla never let the time on the clock interfere with the compassionate care and attention she gave my dad. She made sure he was fully settled in and comfortable for the night, even though she was surely more than ready to head home herself. This spoke volumes about her dedication and compassion, even on the long days.
The next day, my dad was fortunate enough to have Kayla as his nurse again. From the moment she walked into the room, her warm smile and kind presence immediately put both him and me at ease. It was such a comfort knowing that someone so caring and attentive was looking after one of the most important people to me.
I also know that Kayla is working hard to further her education, mentoring with an NP to continue learning and growing. My own daughter, who works alongside Kayla, has many times told me how kind, supportive, and willing to teach Kayla is to her colleagues. It is clear that she not only provides exceptional care to her patients but also serves as a wonderful teammate and mentor herself. Nurses and people like Kayla are rare and invaluable.
One moment that left a lasting impression on all of us came when my dad, who was very emotional about missing his grandson's wedding during his hospital stay, asked Kayla for a hug. My dad is not one to ask for hugs often, which speaks volumes about the impact she had on him. That simple gesture reflected the deep trust and gratitude he felt toward her care.
Our family will always be grateful for the excellent care provided by MMH, but especially for the compassion and dedication Kayla showed. Kayla not only cared for my dad's medical needs but also touched his heart and ours in a way that we will always be grateful for. This is why I believe Kayla is so deserving of the DAISY Award.
