I would like to recognize Katrina Tovar for the extraordinary compassion, teamwork, and leadership she demonstrated during a critical emergency involving an 8-month-old infant in our ED.

Katrina was urgently called to the ED to assist with a critically ill baby. Without hesitation, she arrived, assessed the infant's condition immediately, recognized the severity of the situation, and stepped into action with calm authority. In a moment where seconds mattered, Katrina guided the team in initiating CPR and helped direct life-saving interventions.

Katrina brought not only her extensive neonatal expertise, but the kind of hands-on leadership that only comes from great skill and steady courage. She initiated chest compressions while the team intubated, and she communicated continuously as the code progressed, voicing patient needs, anticipating next steps, and ensuring everyone stayed aligned. Even in the chaos, Katrina remained focused, collaborative, and composed, elevating the entire response and supporting the ED staff through a high-stress, emotionally charged event.

Although the outcome was not what any of us would have wanted, Katrina's impact did not end with resuscitation efforts. Because of her presence and advocacy, the family was given a little more time with their baby and the opportunity to say goodbye. That gift can never be measured, but it will never be forgotten.

Katrina Tovar demonstrates what it truly means to be a nurse. to lead with skill, to serve with courage, and to care with compassion even when the ending hurts. She is the kind of nurse every team hopes for in an emergency, and the kind of person every family deserves in their darkest moment.
