Nursing skills can be taught and practiced to the point of excellence over years of experience, but the kindness and empathy Katie exhibited is something that comes from within her and is seemingly part of her as much as any uniform, badge, or stethoscope.
Although my mom was only under the supervision of Nurse Katie Spencer for a short time, she left a lasting impression on our family because of her obvious care not only for Mom but also for the care that was extended to every member of our family. Katie was a steadying force as we rode the rollercoaster that is the ICU. She calmly explained every procedure she performed and informed us of when she would next repeat that protocol or when she would next deliver Mom's medications.

Katie, let us know in practical and understandable terms what Mom was up against as she labored to breathe comfortably. Katie's confident delivery of her assessment of Mom and her translation of the beeps and other sounds and lights of the monitors Mom was hooked up to gave us a clear insight as to her condition. There was little doubt as to the ultimate outcome of Mom's struggles, but we took comfort knowing that Katie was doing her utmost to keep Mom comfortable as she faced her final struggles.

Katie educated us as she went about her work, which, again, helped us to be better able to decide our course of action relating to getting our mom home for her final days. Katie's cheerfulness and willingness to accommodate us and provide for our every comfort helped as well. She went to gather cups of ice for us to pour our water and soft drinks into while we spent the hours at Mom's bedside.

She continually volunteered to help us in any way possible while she was on her shift. She smiled and gave us her attention every time we passed the nurses' station, which was quite often as we left to take phone calls, meet with the Hospice and home health care team, and confer between family members. She pointed out the snacks and urged us to take advantage of the contents during our vigil. She even went as far as to provide a drawstring bag to allow us to take the remainders home with us when we left the ICU for the last time.

Nursing skills can be taught and practiced to the point of excellence over years of experience, but the kindness and empathy Katie exhibited is something that comes from within her and is seemingly part of her as much as any uniform, badge, or stethoscope. Our family truly appreciated all that Katie Spencer did for every member of our family.
