September 2026 Honoree
Katie Saunders, BSN, RN
On Friday night, before my scheduled surgery, my right knee began to swell significantly. I could no longer bend it, and despite having a high tolerance for pain, it was the worst pain I have ever experienced. I was in tears, extremely uncomfortable, and uncertain how I would make it through the night.
Katie was everything a nurse should be. She remained by my side, checking on me frequently, holding my hand, allowing me to express my fears and frustration, contacting the physician, obtaining orders for pain medication, and most importantly, providing comfort, reassurance, and strength when I needed it most.
My daughter called every couple of hours throughout the night, worried about my condition. Katie kept her informed, answered her questions, and helped ease her fears. While my daughter was understandably concerned, Katie's calm communication provided reassurance to both of us.
I know that units such as Cancer Care, ICU, and Mother-Baby often receive recognition through these awards because of the extraordinary circumstances they face. However, Katie represents the exceptional bedside nurse who delivers outstanding care every single day. She consistently demonstrates compassion, professionalism, clinical excellence, and a genuine commitment to her patients.
Katie shared her aspirations of becoming a team leader and continuing her professional growth, including pursuing opportunities through the scholarship program funded by the LCM Sisters. Based on the care she provided, I have every confidence that she will be exceptional.
It is my honor and privilege to nominate Katherine Saunders for the DAISY Award. She made an incredibly difficult experience more manageable through her skill, compassion, and unwavering support. She is the embodiment of “Serving with the greatest care and love”.
Thank you, Katie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
